Learn to make a traditional Estonian lace pattern from a chart in this intermediate lace class. While the lace looks complicated, it's really just a combination of a few stitches!

You will learn how to: decrease in three ways (k2tog, ssk, cdd), make a yarn over, and read a lace chart.

You must already know how to: cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. We recommend also having some experience with increasing and decreasing.

If you do not know some of the techniques needed, we can teach you anything you need to know in our weekly workshop on Thursdays from 5–7 pm.

Note: this class has homework to be completed before the class starts! See below for instructions.

Required materials: 400 yards of fingering weight yarn, US 5 (3.75 mm) straights or circular needles, the pattern (available for sale in the shop or on Ravelry) and 2 stitch markers. We used Hedgehog Skinny Singles in "Skinny Dip."

Optional materials: highlighter tape.

Homework: You can cast on for one of two widths: 7 (9)".

  1. Using two strands held together, cast on 43 (50) stitches, then cut one strand of yarn and continue working with only one.
  2. Knit four rows.
