Learn to knit a seamless sweater in three or four short sessions! A "top down" sweater is the easiest to make, and making one for a baby is great practice for making an adult sweater (which uses the exact same techniques)!
You will learn how to: read a pattern, use make one increases, put stitches on hold, cast on in the middle of a row, pick up stitches, use the magic loop technique, and make buttonholes.
You should already know how to: cast on, knit, purl, work in a rib, bind off, and weave in ends.
Note: this class has homework to be completed before the class starts! Come into the shop at least a couple days beforehand to get your pattern and we will explain what to do before your class.
Required materials: 220 yards of DK or light worsted weight yarn, US 7 (4.5 mm) 32" circular needles, a basic top-down sweater pattern (available at the shop) and 4 stitch markers. We used 1 skein of Hedgehog Fibers DK in color "Poppy."
Please purchase your supplies at Cast Away. If you plan on buying your materials the day of the class, please come at least 15 minutes early.
SIGNING UP Spring and summer are our slow seasons, so we teach all of our classes in two weekly group sessions where students can learn different things at the same time.
For this class you will need to come to three or four sessions spaced one or two weeks apart (to make time for all that knitting in between steps!). You can skip any session if you already know the techniques being taught. No matter what session you start with, you will need to complete homework before coming to your first session, so come in at least a week early to pick out your materials and get your pattern and we'll tell you what homework to do.
First half-hour session: learn how to read a pattern, use markers, and use make one increases.
Second half-hour session, at least one week after the first session: learn how to put stitches on hold, and cast on in the middle of a row.
Third half-hour session, at least one week after the second session: learn how to put stitches back on a needle after being on hold, and use the magic loop technique.
Fourth, half-hour session, at least one week after the third session: learn how to pick up stitches and make buttonholes.
You can sign up for any of the sessions on Mondays or Thursdays. You can also schedule private lessons for any of the sessions. Call us to learn more at (707) 546–9276.
